I have to admit, I’m kind of a snob when it comes to mixes and such. I really just want to be able to sing along or dance along and only the best mixes escape getting on my nerves. The exception to this rule is the mash up. For some reason when it’s only a few songs, I can still groove along quite nicely. One of my favorite mash up artists is Party Ben. While his vidding skills are not so much on point, you can get a good idea about what his work sounds like. Who mixes Snoop with Zeppelin? This guy. I love the sound here.

Probably his most famous mash up is Boulevard of Broken songs. Mashing Green Day, Travis, Eminem/Aerosmith, and Oasis in a way that makes me listen to the original versions of the songs and wish for the mash up version. I think my favorite of all of his mash ups HAS to be Never Feel Good, the mash up of Cake and Gorillaz to the point that I rarely listen to the original versions of either song anymore. I love countdowns. I will watch a countdown on just about anything. I hate all of this celebreality crap but I will watch the 100 worst celebrity feuds because I love countdowns and I just really want to know what’s number one! That said, it should not surprise you that I was psyched as all get out to watch the 100 greatest ’80s songs countdown. I actually ended up watching it with my mother.

So Joe Perry, lead guitarist from Aerosmith, is on screen talking about Jaine’s Got a Gun and mom says, “Wow. He’s good-looking.” To which I freak out. My friend Rachel and I have this long stretching LOVE for Joe Perry and his sexiness. (Yes, I’m a freak.) I give my mom a high-five and we sit back to watch more of the countdown. The number one song was Living On a Prayer by Bon Jovi and that just brings me joy, but that’s not the point.

Point is, mom and I start to get into a discussion about music and how she really doesn’t know anything by Guns N’ Roses. We start listening to Sweet Child of Mine in the car and I was and still am blown away by the talent of Slash. Axl can live or die, but oh that guitar…. so amazing. I then had her listen to Don’t Cry while we were on our way to dinner. (We’d waited until the end of the countdown to leave) She wasn’t much into it but when we were on the way home, we listened to November Rain (and I’d forgotten how much I love that song)
Mom: Wow. This is amazing. Who’d you say this is again?
Me: Guns N’ Roses, mom.
Mom: Who’s that again?

I feel our school systems have let us down once again. I felt like Jack Black in School of Rock. There was the need to raise my hands up to the heavens and scream “What do they teach in this place?!”
