If it Causes You to Conga, I Don’t Want It… and ZOMBIES!

Every year at Dragon*Con I have the opportunity to DJ the Yule Ball for the Young Adult Lit track. I’m a psycho when it comes to making the playlist for that thing. I know that there’s no way to please everyone all of the time but I want people to feel like their tastes are at least going to be represented. I’m not a Nazi about what gets played because I absolutely play songs that I hate. The Electric Slide can just suck it as far as I’m concerned but I still play it because people like to dance to it. Same thing goes for Love Shack, The Cha-Cha Slide, and all of those other “Wedding Staples”. I’m not saying they aren’t fun because enough vodka and Diet Cokes and I’ll dance to just about anything. Even I have my limits though…

The only time where a conga is cool
I hate conga lines. I refuse to play Hot, Hot, Hot or the Loco-Motion because it causes people to conga. I don’t know, nor can I explain, why I hate that particular dance so much… maybe it’s because I was forced to do it in grade school. Going around our parking lot at St. Agnes holding the hips of the 2nd grader in front of you trying to be cool and loco-motion at the same time… or bunny hop. Fuck that! Nope. I refuse. This is one of the many reasons I don’t DJ professionally because I have my imaginary line in the sand that I refuse to cross… REFUSE!!!

Darkness falls across the land. . . The midnight hour is close at hand. . .
At con this year, they made a big fat hairy deal about breaking the world’s record for the largest number of people doing the Thriller dance. It was actually many shades of awesome because this is a highly costumed con so there were a bazillion people walking around dressed as zombies and there is never anything uncool about that. I had friends dressed as Zombie Harry Potter, Zombie Joker, and Zombie Captain Hammer. Talk about AWESOME!. Plus, the dance was just sweet. People really got into and had their choreography down pat. Very cool.

Shaun: David, kill the Queen!
David: What?
Shaun: The jukebox!
But I digress. Wait. What was I talking about? Oh right, zombies. Speaking of Zombies. You guys should watch Shaun of the Dead (amazon dvd). This movie is hysterical. It’s one of those films you don’t go see because you don’t like monster movies and then end up loving because it’s hilarious and the moments in this movie are unbeatable. When they’re going through Shaun’s record collection to decide which albums to throw at the zombies coming at them… priceless. The on beat fight with the zombies to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now (amazon mp3) is just brilliant. Even if you’re not a fan of the horror genre, this movie is absolutely worth watching

“When Tallahassee gets going, he sets the standard for ‘not to be fucked with’.”
As long as we’re on zombies, I have to pay homage to my favorite new zombie movie, Zombieland (amazon dvd). Oh that movie. The graphics, the way the movie plays, the hilarious lines that are ever so quotable it’s like impossible to choose just one bit. Tallahassee’s obsession with freakin’ Twinkies is worth the price of admission but damn I love this movie. The soundtrack, which is unavailable other than the score, is wonderful. It’s got just the right combo of ass kicking hard rock and just randomness. Included in the soundtrack is a song by the Crash Kings, one of my favorite new bands, It’s Only Wednesday (amazon mp3). Another monster movie absolutely worth seeing even if you don’t like monster movies. While much gorier than Shaun of the Dead, it’s no less hilarious.
