Atlanta Art is a non-profit project supported by their sponsors, local Atlanta artists, local Atlanta art teachers, TOMTRO, and us. Their mission is simple. Help support local art programs by supplying materials as simple as pencils and sketch paper. Their monthly art shows showcase art created with support from AtlantaArt.org sponsors, donated materials, and local Atlanta art donated by local Atlanta artists.

Building a better future for Atlanta youth, the creative way.

AtlantaArt.org is being developed as an art community portal that helps local business and citizens support the arts at their local Atlanta public schools and at the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta.  They will be adding a sponsors page and a donations page soon.  100% of all donations will go towards art supplies for local art programs.  If you would like to donate supplies, please contact Audrey at audrey@atlantaart.org for more information.  Examples of supplies that  can be donated are cork board, small pieces of wood (about the size of a hand or smaller), boxes, pencils, paper, crayons, kilns, paint, fabric, wood, tools, lathe, scrap canvas, and the list goes on.  Let them know what you have, and they will be more than willing to take any useful items off your hands.

If you would like to donate artwork to help the cause, please contact Audrey at audrey@atlantaart.org. They will be holding seasonal art shows starting Fall 2009 that will exhibit art created by students benefiting from the program. We will also have art donated by local artists for sale, to help raise funds for local art programs. They will have a newsletter set up soon so you can keep up to date with what’s going on in the local art community and what we’re doing to support it.

The Atlanta Gallery Association burst onto the scene in January 2004 when it hosted the wildly successful ATLart[04], a 16-day citywide art event featuring 70 exhibitions and nine events at multiple gallery and art space locations. A consortium of 33 of Atlanta’s foremost fine art galleries representing the highest standards in art, AGA developed in an effort to create a true sense of unity within the Atlanta arts community. The AGA is dedicated to promoting visual arts and increasing public awareness of Atlanta as a major international art center and ensuring its position as the Cultural Capital of the South.

The Atlanta Gallery Association (AGA) is a non-profit, professional association of Atlanta art galleries. It is dedicated to promoting the visual arts and expanding the reputation of Atlanta as a cultural capital. Currently, AGA’s membership is comprised of 13 galleries committed to the highest standards of fine art. The breadth of work ranges from 18th century to contemporary glass, painting, sculpture, objects d’art, fine art prints, photography, works on paper and conceptual installations by regional, national and international artists.

A cyclorama is a large panoramic painting which is displayed in a cylindrical room so that the painting wraps around the walls. For people standing in the room, the painting makes them feel as though they are standing in the middle of the scene which is depicted, because they are totally surrounded. Cycloramas were immensely popular through the late 19th century, before being displaced by the motion picture.

The invention of the cyclorama is usually credited to Robert Barker, an Irish entrepreneur who displayed the first known cyclorama in 1787. Supposedly, Barker was inspired by the sweeping view from a hilltop, and wanted to share the experience with others. His display proved immensely popular, and soon other painters had taken up the fad, creating cycloramas of their own and generating a new form of entertainment.

During the heyday of the cyclorama, most cycloramas traveled, being rolled up and wrapped between displays. A cyclorama would be displayed at one location for a few weeks before being replaced by a new scene, ensuring a steady flow of visitors to the facilities specially constructed for the display of cycloramas. Some cycloramas even rotated, so people could remain stationary and watch the scenery roll by.

Because the goal of a cyclorama is to make people feel like they are inside the scene, most of these paintings were quite large, and rooms had to be specially designed to accommodate them. The scenery was often larger-than-life, and in many cases the perspective was painstakingly detailed, to preserve the illusion that one was actually standing in the scene. Some cycloramas also came with supportive dioramas, turning the display into a three-dimensional scene.

These massive panoramic paintings brought the sights of the world to communities large and small, appearing at fairs and circuses as well as cyclorama halls. With the advent of the motion picture, the cyclorama faded from the public eye, and many of these paintings were allowed to molder away, or chopped up and sold. A few complete cycloramas remain on display in museums, for people who want to see these interesting historical curiosities for themselves. One famous cyclorama (the Atlanta Cyclorama), located in Atlanta, Georgia, depicts the Battle of Atlanta, and the museum also has a number of Civil War artifacts on display.

Founded in 1954, the Atlanta Artists Center & Gallery is the oldest continuing artists organization in the area. With over 450 members from 10 metro Atlanta counties, they’ve become the largest all volunteer, non-profit (501c3) fine art organization in the Southeast.

Their mission is twofold: to support the growth of their members as artists; to enhance visual arts in communities through outreach programs that include education, exhibitions and special programming.

For over 30 years, they’ve owned and maintained their own facility. They host sketch groups, workshops, demonstrations and monthly member meetings. Their gallery holds 10 juried exhibitions a year, and offers members’ art for sale.

AAC members are a very diverse group. Born in over 20 countries, we represent almost all income levels and ethnic backgrounds. All artists are welcome at the AAC. Some are beginners, while over 100 of their members are represented by commercial art galleries in Atlanta and throughout the U.S.
